Why Detoxification & Environmental Medicine Matters

Detoxification is not about doing “more cleansing.” It is about repairing the systems your body relies on to process, transform, and eliminate toxins safely—including the liver, lymphatic system, gut, mitochondria, immune pathways, and nervous system.

Environmental toxins, chronic infections, and hidden inflammatory triggers can overwhelm these systems, leading to persistent, multi-system symptoms. Mold exposure, Lyme disease and coinfections, heavy metals, pesticides, fragrances, microplastics, and food toxins can all disrupt the brain, immune system, metabolism, hormones, and mitochondrial function.

At Denver Sports & Holistic Medicine, we specialize in comprehensive, root-cause detoxification and environmental medicine for both in-clinic and telemedicine patients nationwide.

If you have been struggling with chronic symptoms, unexplained illness, or inflammation that has not improved despite multiple providers, detoxification may be a missing link in your healing.

Signs You May Have Toxic Overload

Chronic toxic burden often presents as multi-system symptoms, including:

• Brain fog, memory issues, slowed thinking
• Migratory joint pain or unexplained muscle aches
• Chronic fatigue, burnout, post-exertional crashes
• Neuropathy, tingling, internal vibrations, twitching
• Sensitivity to light, sound, chemicals, or fragrances
• Digestive instability: bloating, constipation, diarrhea, nausea
• Sleep disturbances or unrefreshing sleep
• Anxiety, irritability, mood changes
• Hormonal instability or irregular cycles
• POTS-like symptoms, palpitations, dizziness
• Rashes, hives, eczema, psoriasis
• Weak immunity or frequent infections

These symptom clusters are common in mold toxicity, Lyme disease, MCAS, chemical sensitivity, post-infectious syndromes, and complex chronic illness.

Conditions That Often Require Detoxification & Environmental Medicine

• Mold toxicity and mycotoxin illness
• Lyme disease and tick-borne coinfections
• Chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS)
• Heavy metal burden
• Multiple chemical sensitivity
• Mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) and histamine intolerance
• Chronic fatigue syndrome
• Fibromyalgia and widespread inflammatory pain
• Leaky gut, SIBO, Candida, and microbiome imbalances
• Autoimmune activation and immune dysregulation
• Environmental illness and “sick building” reactions
• Post-viral and long-haul inflammatory syndromes

Our Root-Cause Detoxification Process

1. Comprehensive Assessment & Exposure Mapping

We begin with a detailed review of your medical history, environment, symptom patterns, and prior treatments. When clinically indicated, we use advanced diagnostics including:

• Mycotoxin testing
• Tick-borne illness panels
• Organic Acids Test (OAT)
• Heavy metal analysis
• Environmental chemical markers
• GI-MAP microbiome mapping
• Hormonal and metabolic assessments

Advanced Functional Lab Testing

2. Drainage Pathway Optimization (The Foundation of Safe Detox)

Effective detoxification requires open and well-functioning drainage pathways. Before starting deeper detox, we support:

• Liver and gallbladder function
• Lymphatic circulation
• Bile flow and Phase I/II liver pathways
• Gut motility and daily elimination
• Hydration, minerals, and electrolytes
• Mitochondrial “priming” for energy production

This step prevents reactions and protects sensitive patients. Gut support is often essential.

3. Gentle, Targeted Toxin Removal

Once your body is prepared, we gradually introduce targeted detoxification strategies for:

• Mycotoxins
• Heavy metals
• Endocrine-disrupting chemicals
• Microbial and environmental toxins
• Biotoxins from Lyme and coinfections

Your customized plan may include:

• Binders matched to your toxin profile
• Glutathione repletion and antioxidant therapy
• Mitochondrial cofactors
• Anti-inflammatory nutrition
• Nervous system balancing
• Herbal protocols for chronic infections
• Biofilm disruption when indicated

4. Mitochondrial Repair — The Key to Lasting Recovery

Detoxification is incomplete without restoring cellular energy.

We integrate:

• NAD+ precursor support
• CoQ10, PQQ, alpha-lipoic acid
• Minerals and amino acids
• Red light therapy
• Acupuncture for mitochondrial signaling

5. Nervous System Regulation for Detox Success

Chronic toxicity keeps the body in fight-or-flight, suppressing detoxification and healing pathways.
Our nervous system therapies include:

• Vagus nerve activation
• Acupuncture
• Cranial & fascial techniques
• Regulation-based breathwork
• Somatic stabilization
• PEMF-style bioenergetic therapies

6. Rebuilding After Detox

As toxic burden decreases, care shifts toward stabilization and rebuilding across systems:

• Gut and microbiome repair
• Immune system recalibration
• Hormonal restoration
• Metabolic resilience
• Structural and tissue recovery when needed

Frequently Asked Questions About Detoxification

1. Do I need testing before starting detoxification?

Not always. Testing can greatly improve precision and safety, but foundational detox pathways can be supported even without labs.

2. How long does detoxification take?

Most patients notice initial improvements within weeks, while deeper detoxification often requires months depending on toxin load, infections, and overall resilience.

3. Can detoxification help Lyme disease and coinfections?

Yes. Detoxification reduces inflammation, improves mitochondrial repair, and decreases Herxheimer reactions associated with microbial die-off.

4. Is detox safe for sensitive patients?

Absolutely. We specialize in sensitive and reactive patients using a gentle, paced, nervous-system-aware approach.

5. Can detoxification help hormone imbalance?

Yes. Environmental toxins disrupt thyroid, adrenal, and reproductive hormones. Detoxification is foundational for hormonal repair.

6. Do you offer detox through telemedicine?

Yes. Most detox pathways, protocols, and follow-ups can be managed remotely.

7. What symptoms can detoxification help improve?

Detoxification can support improvement in fatigue, brain fog, headaches, joint and muscle pain, digestive symptoms, hormone imbalance, skin issues, chemical sensitivity, inflammation, and immune-related symptoms. By reducing toxic burden and supporting elimination pathways, the body is better able to restore normal physiological function.

8. Can detoxification make symptoms worse before they get better?

If detox pathways are overwhelmed or not properly supported, symptoms can temporarily flare. This is why detoxification must be paced, sequenced, and individualized. A regulated, stepwise approach minimizes reactions and supports steady progress rather than symptom escalation.

9. What is the difference between detoxification and drainage support?

Drainage support focuses on opening and strengthening elimination pathways such as the liver, bile flow, lymphatic system, kidneys, and bowels. Detoxification involves mobilizing stored toxins. Proper drainage must be established first to prevent toxins from recirculating and worsening symptoms.

10. How do you prevent detox reactions or Herxheimer responses?

Prevention begins with nervous system regulation and adequate drainage support before introducing stronger detox interventions. Protocols are initiated at low doses, adjusted based on individual response, and progressed only when the body demonstrates sufficient tolerance and resilience.

We also use a push–catch detoxification strategy, which helps minimize Herxheimer reactions by mobilizing toxins (“push”) while simultaneously binding and eliminating them (“catch”). Herxheimer reactions are often the result of detoxification that is too aggressive or poorly sequenced—where toxins are mobilized faster than the body can eliminate them, leading to recirculation and re-toxification. Proper pacing, binding support, and elimination are essential to prevent this process and ensure detoxification remains safe and effective.

11. Is detoxification the same as a cleanse or fast?

No. Detoxification is a structured, physiological process that supports the body’s natural detox pathways. It is not equivalent to short-term cleanses, juice fasts, or extreme dietary programs, which can stress the nervous system and impair detox capacity in sensitive or chronically ill patients.

12. Who should not start detoxification right away?

Patients with significant nervous system dysregulation, adrenal depletion, impaired elimination, or high sensitivity may require stabilization before beginning detox. Preparing the body first improves safety, tolerance, and long-term outcomes.
